Patient perseverance has earned Doris Kluge praise, respect and personal satisfaction

A woman whose work is instrumental in providing dependable people and culture resourcing at Flourish Australia, German-born Doris Kluge is highly commended for her patience and professionalism. Doris offers valuable support to Flourish Australia staff at every level - always making time for people and willing to offer a helping hand, despite a very demanding organisational role.  Through her empathetic interactions with co-workers Doris models what reflective, strengths-based practice in the workplace can look like.

Doris describes her early family life as a ‘typical blue-collar migrant upbringing’ in an era when surrounding overt and covert racial discrimination made her acutely aware of the unfairness of limiting social attitudes.

Doris attained an under graduate commerce degree in employment relations from Wollongong University.  A highlight of her early career was living and working overseas for 5 years where her experience of other cultures strengthened her belief that diversity is what makes life so wonderful and that we are all more the same than we are different.  Travels to and from her father’s birth place in former communist East Germany opened her eyes to the power of possessing a certain type of passport with all the rights or restrictions attached to it.  The experience cemented her belief that our innate or acquired differences should have no bearing on our value or potential as a person.

Indicative of Doris’s determination to push past social limitations was completing a post graduate Masters while on parental leave, raising two young children.  In the years to follow, life as a working parent continued to teach Doris resilience and shaped her positive, pro-active attitude to getting things done which she is renowned for in her work.  The foray into for-purpose work came with joining the Richmond Fellowship of NSW in 2010.  With the organisation’s subsequent merger and continued growth, her responsibilities gained complexity and Doris advanced to a Senior HR Advisory role.

At a personal level, Doris feels very committed to Flourish Australia’s core mission of being a place where mental wellbeing thrives in a context of inclusive community and she lives every day by values that celebrate individual differences.

As Flourish Australia goes from strength to strength, Doris has the opportunity to offer insightful perspectives and make important contributions to organisational policies and the development of human resource management systems. Working within a highly professional and dedicated HR team, she provides practical mentoring, recruitment management and HR assistance; showing genuine dedication to fairness; always aiming to support staff members in a timely manner.

Rewarding for Doris is the knowledge that, not only is she making a positive difference to a great organisation and building up others to contribute as they can, but her achievements are leaving an impression on her kids as they develop into kind, hard-working adults with a healthy social conscience. Working for a world where her daughter will be afforded equal opportunities to those of her son, is a key motivation.

“We all miss out and end up with a diminished society when others are made to feel lesser due to discrimination and exclusion,” Doris says.

Doris’ professional success and the respect people have for her demonstrate the importance of never doubting your abilities; finding the confidence to call others out on discrimination and being willing to ask for support and advice from those you trust and admire.
