Exhibition offers visual insight into living with mental illness | Newcastle Herald

DARRYL Soo describes his mixed media photographs – layered with crayon, watercolours and even flecks of coffee – as his “visual diary”.

Mr Soo takes his camera on expeditions and every bus, train and bike trip he makes, to capture scenes that reflect his thoughts, feelings and experiences.

“You can see different layers and things within the composition and that’s how mental illness is,” he said.

“It’s difficult to explain to somebody, which is why the work is very ambiguous.

“There’s a lot of black in there – as in the black dog, depression – which is always going to be a part of my life, but this is about acceptance. With the support of Flourish, I’ve been able to improve my wellbeing.”
