Flourish Australia Supports Homeless People in Moree

Wed Jun 7, 2017

One of the regions foremost mental health support providers, Flourish Australia, has stepped forward with a $1,000 donation to support local homeless people.

“We’ve made this donation to Moree Area Homelessness Services, given the prevalence of mental health issues amongst homeless people,” Flourish Australia Manager Claire Gillan said.

“Secure and safe accommodation is a critical pillar for anyone embarking on a mental health recovery journey.

“Every dollar towards helping the homeless counts, and we encourage other organisations to make similar donations.”

On any given night more than 105,000 people are considered homeless in Australia due to matters such as domestic violence, job loss, drought, divorce, illness and fires.

Moree has its share of homeless people including those living in overcrowded accommodation, along the river systems or in cars.

The $1,000 donation comes ahead of two local events to raise money for homelessness, and encourage broader awareness of the problem.

A trivia evening of 21 July at Moree Services Club will see proceeds go towards helping local homeless people.

Moree’s 2017 ‘Hike for Homeless’ event on August 5 will see members of the community walk from Moree to Ashley, where a sleep out will be held to give people a feel of what it’s like to ‘sleep rough’.
