New Mental Health Headquarters Opens in Moree

Thu Sep 22, 2016

A new community mental health support headquarters has opened in Moree as demand for services increases.

Foremost not-for-profit community-based mental health service provider Flourish Australia (formerly RichmondPRA) will launch the new facility on Friday 30 September.

Located at 6/25 Auburn Street, the facility boasts a welcoming and vibrant activity centre called “The Hub” where people with mental health issues can purse therapeutic activities such as art and craft and computer activities, or simply hang out.

The Hub provides a safe and secure space where people with mental health issues can interact with other people and feel part of a community – an essential requirement for most people on a mental health recovery journey.

The Hub is also a relaxed environment where support workers can build relationships with people with mental health issues and work on recovery plans.

Flourish Australia supports nearly 40 people in the Moree community through a range of programs that cover housing, employment and community interaction.

More recently Flourish Australia has been the regional National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) coordinator and is available to assist people seeking mental health support under the NDIS.

“The new facility in Moree is a turning point for mental health support in the New England community,” Flourish Australia Moree Manager Claire Gillan said.

“It’s the perfect environment for people with mental health issues to interact and work on their recovery journeys.

“We see that demand for our services will continue increasing and with the new facility we are positioned to meet that demand.”

Moree local Martina Schell first accessed services through Flourish Australia in 2013 and has never looked back.

“Living with mental health issues can bring the lowest of low’s,” Ms Schell said.

“But with day-to-day support and guidance from Flourish Australia I’ve been able to make massive recovery strides.

“One in four people have a mental health issue, but the fact is most with a lived experience can recover and lead independent, meaningful lives if they get the right help at the right time.”
