CARE CONFERENCE TAMWORTH will host a first-of-itskind mental health conference, bringing together the community, health practitioners and support services.

RichmondPRA New England/North West NSW service manager Jim Booth said the Partners In Recovery conference had garnered interest from across the state.

“We have people coming from Sydney, Dubbo, hopefully from the coast and all around the New England and North West region,” he said.

The conference will be held tomorrow at the Tamworth Jockey Club.

It’s the first time such a conference has been held in a regional area.

“We’re looking at better care and co-ordination for people who suffer from mental health challenges, their carers and family,” Mr Booth said.

“It’s not just aiming to be a conference that pulls together all the existing services, but has a high level of involvement from consumers and carers. It’s aimed at people who fall through the cracks.”

Mr Booth said the conference was about finding why people didn’t stay in the mental health system and don’t receive the co-ordinated care they needed.

“We need to find some way to make them work better together,” he said.

“We’re working on a recovery model, not a clinical model. This is not about diagnosis.”

Mr Booth said the conference would involve the general public and not just be a “talk fest” for practitioners.

He said the World Care Session would work to create a model for regional areas and could be tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

Speakers will include family members of those affected by mental health issues, practitioners and those from services who work with sufferers.
