THE NEW England district will be taking to the streets to help raise awareness of suicide.

Community members are invited to join a public walk to raise awareness of suicide, coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day and RU OK Day.

RichmondPRA Armidale Manager Janelle Brandley, who lost her son to suicide last year, will be leading the city.

“Suicide is a tragedy and a social scourge that has terrible impacts amongst families and communities,” Ms Brandley said.

Under a theme of ‘Reaching Out and Saving Lives’, the event is being coordinated by RichmondPRA, one of the region’s foremost not-for-profit organisations providing community-based support for people who live with mental health issues.

“More than 2,500 people across Australia die from suicide every year. People in the community need to be aware of and talk about suicide.

“We’re hoping that as many people as possible will join in this important community event and that a bright spotlight will be put on the very dark problem of suicide.
