Suicide rates hit 10-year high | News Local

Deaths from suicide are at a 10-year high according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics report released last week.

The report recorded 3027 suicides in 2015 — a rate of eight suicides each day — which SANE Australia CEO Jack Heath said was deeply concerning.

“While as a nation we have made real advances in reducing stigma around mild to moderate mental health conditions, there is a huge amount of work to be done to help those at the more severe end of the spectrum,” Mr Heath said.

As part of World Mental Health Day on Monday October 10, a landmark national survey by mental health support providers, Flourish Australia, found that half of all Australians are experiencing a mental health issue, suspect they have a mental health issue or have had a mental health issue at some stage.

But nearly half the population is ‘unsure’ how to recognise mental health issues.
