HOUSING AND ACCOMMODATION BOOST FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS IN NEW ENGLAND AND HUNTER

RichmondPRA has been selected by the O’Farrell Government to provide a new and dynamic housing and accommodation support service for people with a mental illness in the New England and Hunter regions.

Under the state and federally funded $35.2 million HASI (Housing and Support Initiative) Plus program, RichmondPRA will provide support for 19 people in Tamworth and Newcastle.

The local programs and associated capital improvements are worth $9.6 million over the next three years.

HASI Plus is a first in enabling the non-government sector to provide accommodation and a variety of support services for people with a lived experience of mental illness. It assists them to transition back to independent community living and away from long-term institutional care in mental health facilities, correctional facilities and hospitals.

The HASI Plus support services will be recovery-focussed, with an emphasis on holistic care including psycho-social rehabilitation, daily living skills, physical health and workforce participation.

Without such support, people experiencing a mental illness often struggle to find and maintain the kinds of support they require – support that usually comes from multiple organisations and agencies. This makes them vulnerable to becoming unwell, returning to hospital or institutional facilities or being caught in the criminal justice system.

“This is a massive step forward in terms of how people living with a mental illness are provided opportunities to live independently in the New England region,” RichmondPRA CEO Pam Rutledge said.

“HASI Plus gives us an ability to take service provision to another level by providing wrap-around support for clients with differing needs.

“This streamlining makes it easier for us to coordinate client service provision, which in turn facilitates individuals’ journeys towards recovery and independent community living.”

RichmondPRA is now considering accommodation options in Tamworth, where HASI Plus will operate on a 24-hour basis.

“It’s vital that the community recognises the need for services where people can recover in a manner that’s socially and economically effective,” Ms Rutledge added.

“This HASI Plus initiative enables us to do just that.”

RichmondPRA is a not-for-profit organisation providing recovery focussed support programs, accommodation and hope for people with a mental illness in New South Wales and Queensland. Advocating community-based assistance, it is a leading mental health support provider that has been in operation for more than 55 years.
