Time To Talk About Youth Mental Health As Australia’s 100th headspace Service Officially Opens In Broken Hill

Tue Oct 31, 2017

Today’s headspace Broken Hill launch should be a prompt for local young people to talk more openly about mental health and reach out for help at the earliest opportunities.

Flourish Australia, the lead agency running headspace Broken Hill, said the service would be a game-changer for local mental health management.

headspace is structured to help younger people aged between 12 and 25 and is already making an enormous difference in terms of local young people recognising and understanding mental health.

“Mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age or occupation,” Flourish Australia Broken Hill Manger Rynnette Gentle said.

“One in two people will have a lived experience of a mental health issue at some stage in their life and one in four at any given time.

“Those that reach out for help often recover, whereas those that ignore problems are more likely to face additional and exacerbating issues such as isolation, unemployment and drug and alcohol abuse. In worst-case scenarios suicide can be an outcome.

“headspace is a centre where mental health specialists can give young local people the right help at the right time in an easy-to-access, discreet and relaxed environment.

“We’re urging local young people who are concerned about their mental health - or their families and friends - to make contact, even if it’s just to ask basic questions about mental health.

“There can be a domino effect when people use a centre like headspace, because they walk away with knowledge about mental health that can help relatives and friends, and influence them to get help too if necessary.”

The $1.6 million headspace centre at 231 Blende St will be run by up to six full-time equivalent staff, supported by a team of as many as 20 professionals bringing a range of mental health and wellbeing support services, general medical support, vocational and educational services and alcohol and drug services.

Young people who are concerned about their mental health – or the mental health of their families and friends – can drop in to the centre, call 02 9393 9699 or email headspace.brokenhill@flourishaustralia.org.au.
