How to do a “digital detox” – and why your mind will thank you

In an always-on world, a digital detox offers a much-needed pause. Whether it’s doomscrolling social media, compulsively checking emails, or bingeing videos late into the night, our digital habits can chip away at attention, mood, and mental wellbeing.

In Australia, parents report that excessive screen time is the top health concern they have for their children, and they are worried that their children spend too much time on electronic devices. Meanwhile, an American survey indicates that more than 70 per cent of adults are concerned about how technology affects their mental health and personal relationships, and 62 per cent say they feel addicted to their devices or the internet.

The good news is that disconnecting – even if only  briefly – can help you feel calmer, more focused, and more present. Here are some tips for running your own digital detox.

  1. Start by setting clear boundaries. Pick a time – perhaps a weekend or even just an afternoon – to switch off non-essential devices. Let friends or colleagues know you’ll be offline.
  2. Next, create physical distance. Move your phone out of the bedroom or leave it behind on walks. Consider using tools like website blockers or grayscale mode to reduce temptation. Replace screen time with enjoyable offline activities – read a book, cook a meal, go outside, or catch up with someone face to face.
  3. Use the detox to observe your habits. What apps do you miss? What do you reach for without thinking? Noticing these patterns can help you make more mindful choices about technology in the future.

The mental health benefits are real. Research shows digital detoxing can reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. It can improve sleep, lift mood, and boost your ability to focus. Being offline also creates space for deeper connection – with yourself, others, and the world around you.

A digital detox doesn’t have to mean quitting tech forever. It’s about resetting your relationship with devices so they serve your wellbeing rather than undermining it. And remember that everyone is different – finding the right balance of online and offline time is a highly individual process.
