How to lead yourself through uncertainty and change

According to the World Health Organization, fear, worry and stress are normal responses “at times when we are faced with uncertainty or the unknown.”

Periods of uncertainty and change can feel disorienting – but they also offer a powerful opportunity for growth, clarity, and self-leadership.

The key is not to eliminate uncertainty, but to develop a mindset and toolkit that helps you move forward with intention.

Start by shifting your mindset. Instead of resisting change, ask: What can I learn here? Where am I holding onto rigid expectations? By softening the need for total control, you make room for adaptability and resilience. Research shows that psychological flexibility – being present, open to experience, and guided by values – reduces stress and enhances well-being.

Self-leadership begins with awareness. Take time to notice your emotional responses and identify the stories you're telling yourself. Are they based on fear or possibility? Replacing fear-based thoughts with grounded, value-driven ones helps you regain agency.

Practical strategies matter too. Break big challenges into small, achievable steps. Set goals that are specific and adaptable, rather than idealised or fixed. Even small wins can rebuild a sense of momentum and purpose.

Nurturing your physical and mental energy is vital. Rest, exercise, mindfulness, and healthy boundaries aren’t indulgences – they’re non-negotiable for staying centred and effective in difficult times. So is reaching out: connect with others who can offer perspective, encouragement or accountability.

Above all, treat yourself with compassion. You don't have to have all the answers. Leading yourself through uncertainty is not about perfection – it’s about staying honest, grounded, and willing to keep moving, even when the path isn’t clear.

When you approach change as something to be worked with – not just survived – you lead yourself with courage, not just competence. And that’s where true resilience begins.
