How to use AI tools to promote emotional regulation

With all the ongoing hype about Artificial Intelligence (AI), some people are wondering if it can be used for mental health treatment.

While AI can’t replace therapy – and it’s important to understand that AI chatbots are not therapists – if used cautiously it can be a helpful tool on the journey towards better mental health. This includes helping with simple emotional regulation tasks.

As Psychology Today explains, emotional regulation is the ability to exert control over one’s own emotional state. It may involve behaviors such as rethinking a challenging situation to reduce anger or anxiety, hiding visible signs of sadness or fear, or focusing on reasons to feel happy or calm.

Understanding what you’re feeling

For many people, AI-powered tools can provide structured opportunities for self-reflection, calming strategies, and mood tracking. These features can help individuals better understand their feelings and patterns of behaviour.

For example, AI-based journaling tools can prompt users to explore their thoughts, name emotions, and reflect on experiences. This kind of regular, low-pressure check-in can help people recognise emotional triggers and cultivate healthier responses over time.

Some tools offer interactive exercises based on evidence-informed approaches, such as breathing techniques or mindfulness prompts. These can support people during moments of stress or overwhelm, helping them pause and reset.

AI tools are available 24/7, making them especially useful for people who may be waiting to access care or who need support between therapy sessions. They can also offer a sense of privacy and low-stakes engagement, which some users find helpful.

AI is not a therapist

However, it’s vital to understand that AI cannot provide a diagnosis, manage crises, or offer the kind of deep, tailored support that trained professionals deliver. They should be seen as a complement – not an alternative – to clinical care.

If you’re experiencing ongoing distress or struggling to cope, speak to your GP, mental health provider, or a crisis support service.
