NAIDOC: A vision for the future

NAIDOC Week reminds us all that this future is not only possible, but within reach – if we listen, learn, and act. As the National NAIDOC Committee puts it, “[f]rom this solid foundation, the next generation will rise – grounded in the strength of our Elders, history, inspired by a shared vision, and committed to building a legacy of unity, respect, and self-determination for all.”

Be part of this transformative journey by actively engaging in NAIDOC Week events, supporting Indigenous initiatives, and championing the voices of First Nations peoples in your community. Together, we can create a nation grounded in equity, cultural celebration, and shared prosperity. Join the movement and help build the legacy of unity that will inspire generations to come.

NAIDOC Week is a time of celebration, reflection and truth-telling. It honours the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples while offering an opportunity to look to the future.

This year’s theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," celebrates the achievements of the past as well as the bright future ahead, drawing strength and inspiration from young Indigenous leaders, the vision of First Nations communities, and the legacy of Australia’s ancestral people.

Across the continent, Indigenous Australian communities are envisioning a future grounded in self-determination, justice and cultural strength. Elders, youth, artists, activists, educators, academics, entrepreneurs and more are all part of this vision. From calls for truth-telling to aspirations for improved health, housing and education, First Nations peoples are working to build an Australia where Indigenous voices are not only heard but lead the way.

Young leaders in particular are stepping forward, determined to create a future where culture is not just preserved but lived, practised and celebrated every day. They are fighting for access to Country, for climate justice, for equitable opportunity and for space to speak in their own voices.

As Ngarrindjeri woman Shaylem Wilson says, “I want to be the kind of ancestor who never turned away from the hard truths and who stood beside our young mob when they needed it most.”

Let this week be a call to action, inspiring all Australians to commit to lasting change, honoring the resilience of Indigenous peoples, and embracing a shared legacy built on mutual respect and understanding. You can be part of this transformative journey to ensure that the next generation rises with courage, wisdom, and hope, carrying forward the enduring spirit of NAIDOC.
