Tips for beating the holiday blues

For many people, the Christmas holiday season is a time of connection and celebration. But for others, it can bring loneliness, pressure, or a sense of not measuring up. If you’re finding this time of year difficult, there are some simple, evidence-informed steps that can help you enjoy the season.

Stay connected in ways that feel manageable
You don’t need a packed social calendar to feel supported. A short phone call, a walk with a friend, or attending a local community event can provide a sense of connection. If you’re far from family, consider volunteering with a local organisation – giving time to others is shown to lift mood and reduce feelings of isolation.

Prioritise diet, sleep, and exercise
The end of the year often disrupts our usual habits. Maintaining a few steady routines – like regular sleep, balanced meals, and daily movement – can help regulate your mood and energy. Even a 15-minute walk outside or some light stretching can make a difference.

Set realistic expectations
Holidays can come with pressure: to be cheerful, to spend money, or to host the “perfect” gathering for family and friends. It’s okay to set limits. Think about what genuinely matters to you and plan around that. Keeping expectations realistic reduces stress and helps you make the most of your holiday.

Be mindful of your budget
For many, financial strain can be a major source of stress at this time of year. Simple, low-cost approaches can help you stay connected without stretching your budget. Some ideas include: organising a picnic instead of dining out, setting a family spending limit for Christmas gifts, or giving handmade gifts instead of store-bought presents.

Create small moments of joy
You don’t have to force a festive spirit, but building small moments of fun into your week can support your wellbeing. That might mean visiting a favourite beach, reading in a sunny spot, going for a bike ride, run or walk, seeing a film, or listening to music that boosts your mood.

Rethink your phone use
There’s no need to totally disconnect from your phone, but spending less time on it allows you to enjoy the present moment without distraction. This holiday might even be a good opportunity to schedule a social media detox.

Reach out if you need support
If the season feels overwhelming, talking to someone can help. Whether it’s a trusted friend, your GP, or a helpline, support is available.
