Corrine - Small changes, growing confidence

For Corrine, creating lasting change didn’t happen through one big decision. It came through many small, consistent steps.

As a single mother, Corrine had spent many years balancing family responsibilities, employment and mental health challenges while alcohol had become part of her daily routine.

Eventually, Corrine recognised that drinking was affecting her relationships, behaviour, self-esteem and overall wellbeing.

That recognition became the beginning of a different chapter.

Making time for change

When Corrine joined Flourish Australia’s Connect and Thrive Program in Maroubra, she was experiencing low self-confidence and struggling to recognise her own abilities and strengths.

Rather than expecting everything to change at once, Corrine and Flourish Australia staff explored practical ways to gradually replace drinking habits with other activities during the times when she would usually drink.

The goals were achievable and practical: organising her home, visiting neighbours, going for walks and gradually changing her drinking habits.

Corrine also took part in yoga and Pilates through Connect and Thrive and later joined a local gym to continue Pilates classes independently.

Regular conversations about her achievements, including the small ones, helped strengthen Corrine’s confidence, motivation and belief in what she could achieve.

“Over time, my confidence continues to grow.”

Finding fulfilling work

Positive change has also opened another important door for Corrine: meaningful employment.

Corrine secured a role supporting people with brain cancer, working three shifts each week. She says she enjoys the work and appreciates the gratitude she receives from the people she supports and their families.

She also spends some evenings completing online training related to her work, while making time for self-care and spending time with her daughter.

For Corrine, these activities have helped create a life filled with things that feel fulfilling and worthwhile.

Looking towards the future

Corrine still has goals she wants to pursue.

She would like to start her own business one day and continue making positive changes in her life. Most importantly, her experience has shown her what can happen when small, achievable steps build upon one another.

Corrine chose to share her experience in the hope that it could encourage other people who are also working towards positive change.

Her story is a powerful reminder that progress doesn’t always need to happen all at once.

Sometimes, small and consistent changes can become the foundation for something much bigger.
