Heidi, Harris Park - Meaningful employment has been key to my recovery

I’ve come such a long way since finding a new career I love and Flourish Australia remind me daily of my worth.

I migrated from Hong Kong to Australia when I was 10. As a teen I experienced paranoia but didn’t recognise this as a mental health issue until I received a diagnosis aged 19. With medication it was manageable at first but I later undertook rehabilitation at Cumberland Hospital.

My housemates there seemed very happy in their work so I asked for support to find a job and was referred to Flourish Australia’s packaging warehouse. The site manager there has become a mentor to me and provided training that prepared me for an admin assistant position I love. I have previously worked in administration and obtained a degree in Earth Science before doctors advised me to remove myself from the pressures of a structured role.

Flourish Australia is such a supportive and flexible workplace that I am thriving. When I experienced anxiety and began double checking my work, they showed me how to believe in myself and I became more productive.

I enjoy the independence this role gives me. For the first time, I feel I’m on top of my work and moving forward in life. Becoming more engaged with my work has boosted my self confidence and freed me to have more fun. I’ve discovered I love experiencing new restaurants and it was a proud moment for me to represent Flourish Australia in the City to Surf. I look forward to work each day because of the friendships I’ve made and feel good in myself each time we connect.

Once I choose to take the step to open employment, I will be more highly skilled and hold certificates in Business Administration and Warehousing Operations. Every day I am encouraged to realise my full potential. I think about what I want for my future and I’m more connected to my community than ever before.
