Hellen - A new outlook through art as part of an NDIS plan

Since Flourish Australia assisted me to access the NDIS, every aspect of my life is improving over time, like a fine wine!

The people at Flourish Australia took the time to get to know me and what I wanted out of life. Together we put an NDIS plan in place that provides me with the practical support I need,     such as getting around to appointments and developing new skills. My wonderful peer worker has encouraged me to focus on the positives in my life since my husband passed away.

For many years, I poured all of my energy into raising three kids. As part of my NDIS package, Flourish Australia encouraged me to reconnect with my passion for art by participating in classes and groups. Art is my way of working through thoughts and feelings. My “PULL” sculpture, of a Pitt Pony hauling a heavy load, represents me growing stronger with each difficult step. My lino print of a woman cowering in the dark reflects my experience of deep grief.

Noticing the joy I found in creating, Flourish Australia invited me to connect with other artists at Art-Reach and introduced me to Journey’s Connection at Maitland Art Gallery where I’m inspired by mentoring workshops with various artists. I gained the motivation to complete a TAFE Diploma in Fine Art and will soon complete my Advanced Diploma.

Flourish Australia even assisted me with setting up a studio in my house. Their support is absolutely first class! The seed of hope they planted in me is watered with encouragement. As it grows, it connects me to something else which leads to even more, so I’m always moving forward at my own pace. My goal now is to hold a fundraising exhibition for suicide prevention, a cause my late husband volunteered for.

We all have the power to choose to mature into a nice wine or turn sour. Thanks to the NDIS and Flourish Australia, I see myself as a fine wine that just keeps improving with age.
