For many years, Mazen lived with a level of social isolation that made everyday life difficult.
After becoming unwell in his mid-twenties, he found it challenging to stay connected with others and engage in activities that once brought him enjoyment. He was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder and experienced several hospital admissions over the years.
"I have been able to manage my thoughts, change my thinking and not dwell on tragic things," Mazen says.
With support from Flourish Australia's Connection Hub at Flowerdale Cottage in Liverpool, Mazen has been working towards building confidence, increasing independence and reconnecting with his community.
Like many people, Mazen doesn't describe himself as naturally outgoing.
"I'm a bit shy around people," he says.
Taking part in Connection Hub activities has helped him gradually step outside his comfort zone. Through group outings, art programs, picnics, barbecues, walks and opportunities to connect with others, he has found ways to become more involved in the community.
Mazen particularly enjoyed visiting local landmarks around Liverpool, fishing trips and a visit to Palm Beach, where the television series Home and Away is filmed. These experiences provided opportunities not only to get out and about, but also to build relationships and confidence along the way.
Family has also played an important role in Mazen's recovery journey.
Born in Australia to migrant parents, Mazen speaks both Arabic and English and enjoys spending time with family. He especially appreciates the support of his brother.
"My brother is very understanding about my mental health issues," Mazen says. "My parents have been supportive too."
Together they share simple moments, from family picnics to music and gardening.
The support Mazen received through Flourish Australia became particularly important when he sought access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). While the process was challenging, his support team worked alongside him and his treating health professionals to advocate for the supports he needed.
According to Support Coordinator Tam Nguyen, the successful outcome was the result of a collaborative effort involving Mazen, his family and his treating team. After several years of advocacy and support, Mazen successfully gained access to the NDIS in 2025.
Today, Mazen continues to focus on building confidence, maintaining his wellbeing and creating a positive future for himself.
For him, recovery hasn't been about one single breakthrough moment. Instead, it has been about finding connection, accepting support and taking small steps forward—one day at a time.
