Peter - Getting my P’s opened up my world

Securing my dream job with the local golf course inspired me to go after my P’s as a next step to living independently.

Having meaningful work at Mollymook’s Hilltop Golf Course has been so good for my mental health. Voted the second-best course in Australia, the 18 hole Championship course is known as ‘The Ultimate Challenge’ and rated PG, which means it’s pretty hardcore with lots of sand traps and water.

I actually play a lot of golf so it’s been a thrill to have access to the club facilities through my staff membership. I can golf whenever I like and use the carts I’m paid to clean!

Feeling so fulfilled on the work front motivated me to want to go after my provisional driver’s licence and gain even more independence. Flourish Australia’s support and encouragement played a big part in my preparations for the practical test and I’ve now achieved that goal too.

Having the freedom to drive myself around without having to rely on my carer or Support Worker has opened up my world in wonderful ways. It’s a great feeling to be able to get myself to and from work, easily make my way around town to connect socially, or pop down to the beach for a swim whenever I feel like it.

Accessing Flourish Australia’s services for the past seven years has been life changing. I love getting together with one of their groups on Tuesdays, to go fishing, and have made a great mate there who lives right around the corner from me.

They let me know that my NDIS funding would also cover courses in other essential life skills, so I’ve taken up cooking sessions with Harbourside Therapy on Fridays. The teacher used to run a burger place up North and is really good at what he does which fires me up to want to try it for myself at home. Making meals for my Mum and Dad has added to my sense of independence. My Dad scored the pasta I learned to make last week, 8 out of 10!

I’m grateful to still have the support of my whole family who’ve journeyed with me through everything.

I would encourage anyone struggling with their mental health to just have a go at something you’ve always wanted to do. You won’t know how much you can achieve unless you try new things. Take that chance!

I’m loving living the fulfilling life I’m building for myself, one step at a time.
