National Reconciliation Week (NRW) runs from 27 May to 3 June each year. It’s an opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation together.
What is reconciliation?
At its core, reconciliation is about deepening connections between Australians – including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and non-Indigenous peoples – for the shared benefit of all our communities.
Australia’s history of reconciliation is not a linear one; we have made great strides and experienced disappointing setbacks.
Reconciliation is a continuing process that reminds us that, although generations of Australians have worked tirelessly to drive real change, the road ahead will demand just as much – if not more – commitment.
Building bridges for the future
This year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. It calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.
The artwork for the #NRW2025 theme was created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw. It features native plants − which are known for regenerating after fire and thriving through adversity − to symbolise our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal. This is a time for growth, reflection, and commitment to walking together.
How to get involved
We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value our nation’s many peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated in workplaces, schools and early learning services, community organisations and groups, and by individuals Australia-wide.
The Reconciliation Australia website has a number of ideas about how to mark Reconciliation Week, including:
- Starting a Reconciliation Action Plan in your organisation or educational institution for a proven, structured and strategic approach to advancing to reconciliation.
- Joining the conversation by hosting a National Reconciliation Week event with friends, family or colleagues.
- Hosting a Reconciliation Film Club screening to bring people together and start conversations.
