At the end of August we proudly marked Wear it Purple Day.
We are committed to promoting and delivering safe places for LGBTIQA+SB young people to grow and be who they are. We love the purpose of Wear it Purple “to ensure every LGBTIQA+SB young person knows they are seen, supported and never alone”. That is a terrific focus - and life changing - as young people grow into who they are, and find their place in the world. This year the theme was “Colours of Courage”. A great way to celebrate the diversity of the experience and young people’s lives.
This is an important focus given we know the impact of not being able to be who you are on people’s lives and mental health. A welcoming and safe place can make all the difference to whether you turn up seeking help, and whether you come back.
I am proud of the Flourish Team does every day to welcome people and walk alongside them. That human connection, and companionship along the way through the ups and downs, is an important way of building trust, developing confidence, and feeling hope for a better future.
This month Kim’s story is a great example of what can happen when those things are experiences. It shows how life changing stepping through that door and finding welcome can be; the impact of the experience of connection, and how it can develop into a feeling of hope. Norman’s story shows what recovery can mean - opening the door to new opportunities, continuing to learn and taking action, one step at a time.
We are also excited to share with you a new video we have made about our approach to Peer Work, which starred in the opening session of the TheMHS Conference in Sydney in August this year. It showcases how Flourish Australia values, develops and supports Peer Workers. We are grateful for the contributions every day.
