Wear it Purple Day on August 29 is a celebration of LGBTQIA+ youth and allies and an opportunity to shine a light on the thousands of schools, community organisations, universities, and workplaces that are coming together to create a more inclusive future for all Australians.
Originally founded by students in response to global stories of teenagers taking their own lives due to bullying and harassment, Wear it Purple Day has become an international movement of love and support that happens every year in August.
The theme for 2025 is “Bold Voices, Bright Futures”. Artist Lee Evatt (he/them), winner of Wear It Purple’s Youth Action Council Design Competition, has created a campaign message and artwork in celebration of LGBTQIA+ people openly and visibly achieving their dreams in sport, art, science and more.
There are a range of fun ways you can get involved, from hosting an activity to promoting the day on your own social media channels. The Wear it Purple Day website has some more great ideas, including organising events at your school or workplace, to speaking up for LGBTQIA+ rights and acceptance. Most importantly, don’t forget to wear something purple!
Supporting LGBTQIA+ youth
Events like Wear it Purple Day are an opportunity for all of us to show our support for LGBTQIA+ youth in our communities. According to Minus18, 55 per cent of queer youth have been discriminated against due to their LGBTQIA+ identity. However, 86 per cent of LGBTQIA+ youth said just seeing someone wearing rainbow accessories made them feel safer.
Flourish Australia’s commitment to diversity
Flourish Australia works with people in ways that are culturally safe, respectful and free from discrimination; ensuring fair, equitable, just and non-prejudicial treatment.
We believe that every individual makes a unique and valuable contribution to the community. We celebrate Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) communities, LGBTQIA+ communities and people with a disability.
Our approach is to continually seek innovative solutions to inequalities, that go above and beyond the requirements of legislative compliance, in order to meet the unique needs and individual circumstances of each person we support.
We are a proud member of ACON's Welcome Here Project, which supports businesses and services throughout Australia to create and promote environments that are visibly welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQIA+ communities.
