In March 2026, the Australian Government launched Medicare Mental Health Check In, a free, low‑intensity digital mental health service for people experiencing mild stress, distress, anxiety or low mood.
The service provides evidence‑based online tools, with the option to receive guidance from trained practitioners via phone or video. It is designed as an early support option, particularly for people who are unsure where to begin or who want help managing concerns before they become more severe.
Medicare Mental Health Check In is available nationwide, does not require a referral or diagnosis, and is free for people aged 16 years and over living in Australia.
People can access the service by:
- Visiting medicarementalhealthcheckin.gov.au
- Calling 1800 595 212 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am–5pm)
How this service fits within Australia’s mental health system
Medicare Mental Health Check In is one part of a broader mental health system offering different types of support at different stages. Other options include:
- GPs, who assess needs and coordinate care
- Psychologists and mental health clinicians, providing therapy
- Psychiatrists and specialist services, for more complex needs
- Hospital and emergency services, for urgent mental health care
- Community‑based and NDIS‑funded supports, offering ongoing, practical assistance
Low‑intensity digital services can be helpful for early concerns. When challenges persist or begin to affect daily life, people may need to step up to, or combine, other forms of support.
