The Power of Art for Mental Health and Connection

Art can be much more than something we create or admire. For many people, creativity offers a way to express thoughts and emotions, connect with others and make space for reflection.

Research in Australia has highlighted the relationship between arts participation, health and wellbeing. Creative Australia’s Creating Wellbeing research found that most respondents believed engaging with the arts could positively impact mental health, social health, family life and community life.

Creative activities can take many forms, from painting and drawing to photography, music, craft, writing and performance. Research discussed by the University of Melbourne has also highlighted the role creative arts can play in meaning-making, expressing emotions and developing positive relationships.

Creativity, connection and belonging

One of the strengths of art is that there is no single right way to participate.

Creating something can provide an opportunity for self-expression when experiences are difficult to put into words. Sharing art can also create opportunities for connection, conversation and a greater understanding of each other’s experiences.

For people on their mental health recovery journey, creativity can provide another way to explore what matters to them, recognise their strengths and participate in their community.

Celebrating creativity at Buckingham House

On 22 October 2026, Flourish Australia celebrated Mental Health Month with the Buckingham House Mental Health Month Art Show 2026 at Buckingham House, Surry Hills. The annual exhibition showcased artworks created by people we support, highlighting creativity, self-expression and belonging.

Guided by this year’s theme, Together We Thrive, the Art Show celebrated the achievements, talents and stories that emerge when people come together in a supportive community.

The event provided an opportunity for art, mental health and community to come together in one space, continuing Buckingham House’s tradition of using artistic expression to encourage conversations about mental health.

Together we thrive through creativity

Mental Health Month reminds us that there are many ways we can support our wellbeing. Creativity is one of them, offering opportunities for expression, participation and connection with others.

The Buckingham House Art Show was a celebration of just that: the creativity and strengths of people we support and the importance of creating spaces where people can connect, express themselves and feel a sense of belonging.

At Flourish Australia, we are proud to celebrate creativity as part of building inclusive communities where everyone can flourish.
