Finding your community

Coming out can be a big moment for people. Affirming your orientation and letting those around you know can be as daunting as it is exciting. There are many reasons why people may come out or may choose not to - and there is no right way to do it. However, finding a community to support you can be a good way to start.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and/or intersex community, often shorthanded to LGBTI or simply community is an umbrella term that represents about 11% of Australians. It typically means a group of diverse people who might share common goals or issues.

A community may be found in a sporting team, a social club, an activist network, it may be a formal group or an informal gathering. Finding community might involve joining a club or through casual social connections at a bar, club, or parade. You can be part of the community and identify as how you want even if you are not be sure exactly where you're at. It's all about feeling included and safe to bring your whole self.

Some people continue to face discrimination because of how they identify or their sexual orientation, so the community will often be involved in promoting inclusion and equality. This might mean advocating in the media, joining rallies, writing to parliaments, or promoting safe spaces. Many organisations across Australia actively promote inclusion and can be a great starting point for finding a community for you.

Some organisations exist to provide services for the community. Mental health and other health services can create barriers to LGBTI communities accessing what they need, but the health system is increasingly promoting safe practices for all people. This includes promoting inclusive language and being aware of different experiences across our society.

Flourish Australia works with people in ways that are culturally safe, respectful and free from discrimination, ensuring fair, equitable, just and non-prejudicial treatment.

We believe that every individual makes a unique and valuable contribution to the community. We are a proud member of ACON's Welcome Here Project. We are a safe place for LGBTI people, and our peer workers network means there is likely someone who has a shared experience and can support you.
