First LGBTQI suicide prevention service set to begin in NSW

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) people in New South Wales are set to benefit from a brand new LGBTQI suicide prevention service

The service, a first for the state of NSW will be run by our friends at ACON and allows for LGBTQI people aged 18 years and older across NSW to access “tailored support from a dedicated suicide prevention service.”

The service is free and will include a mix of “face-to-face outreach and virtual care” with a strong emphasis on peer-to-peer support, with staff drawing upon their own lived experience as mentors and advocates.

Research proves that a LGBTIQ specific service is required - roughly a quarter of LGBTQI people in NSW have experienced suicidal thoughts at some point in their lives.

In addition, 57% of the LGBTQI population have experienced high to very high levels of distress, in contrast to 13% in the general population.

Flourish Australia is committed to LGBTQI equality and are proud members of ACON’s welcome here program which supports businesses and services throughout Australia to create and promote environments that are visibly welcoming and inclusive of LGBTIQ communities.
