Harmony Week: Celebrating Australia’s multiculturalism

Running from  March 21-26, Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and inclusion.

Nearly half of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was. Cultural diversity and multiculturalism is central to Australia’s national identity.

More than 80,000 Harmony Week events have been held across Australia since 1999, with sports clubs, churches, local, state and federal governments all hosting events to celebrate Australia’s multicultural community.

The week is also a time to reflect and take action on what more needs to be done to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination here in Australia and globally.

The week begins with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which has been observed annually since 1960 and marks the anniversary of police in Sharpeville, South Africa, killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960.

The theme for 2022 is Voices for action against racism which aims to increase  public participation and representation in all areas of decision-making to prevent and combat racial discrimination.

The United Nations are encouraging people to share their picture online with the #FightRacism which you can do here.

To get involved with Harmony Week, head to  www.harmony.gov.au to find out what events are on in your area and how to participate online.

While Harmony Week celebrates the success of Australia’s multicultural community, it’s also important to remember that are still cultural barriers which must be removed.

This is especially the case with mental health support.

Creating inclusive environments is vital to ensuring better mental health outcomes. Data suggests a significant number of Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds do not seek access to mental health support services as a result of cultural barriers.

Flourish Australia is committed to diversity, we ensure the work we do is always done in a way which is culturally safe, respectful and free from discrimination. To find out more about our commitment to diversity check out
