The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) wants to hear from First Nations and non-Indigenous providers, stakeholders and participants about how it can support providers to offer sustainable and culturally safe supports to First Nations participants via the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
Consultation on a new strategy – known as The First Nations Market and Sector Development Strategy – is open until 31 December 2025.
The strategy aims to support First Nations providers and improve cultural capability among non-Indigenous providers in the NDIS market. Its deliverables include:
· more Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and Aboriginal Business Enterprises successfully operating in the NDIS marke
· better access for First Nations participants to NDIS supports in or near their communities
· improved outcomes by providing increased choice and control for First Nations participants.
First Nations and non-Indigenous providers, participants and the disability community are invited to provide feedback on the plan.
In 2024, the NDIA administered over $3 billion in NDIS payments to First Nations participants. Around 50,000 providers supported First Nations participants during this period, but fewer than 1 per cent were known First Nations providers.
Growing the number of First Nations providers and improving the cultural capability of non-Indigenous providers will create better outcomes for First Nations participants and support broader economic opportunities for First Nations people.
