How to boost your mood with self-care

Taking care of your physical wellbeing is essential to maintaining a healthy mind. Eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly doesn’t just help you look better; it helps you feel good and boosts resilience for when life gets tough.

Investing in your physical wellbeing and appearance doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small steps can lead to big changes to build self-esteem, social skills and emotional health.

Get moving

Find a physical activity you enjoy – whether it’s walking, yoga, running or swimming – and work towards spending 30 minutes a day on it. Setting aside a regular time, scheduling reminders, getting an exercise buddy or joining a club will help turn a new hobby into a habit. The best kind of exercise is the type you find fun and want to keep doing. 

Grooming

Taking simple steps to look after your skin can boost your confidence. You don’t need a million fancy products; cleansing, moisturising and, most importantly, applying sunscreen are enough. This can help tackle stubborn problems like acne, bolster body image and shield against skin cancer. 

Nutrition

Eating well doesn’t have to be boring or break the bank. Stock up on frozen and canned veggies that won’t wilt in the fridge and work them into dishes you love. Swap out refined carbohydrates for wholegrains and prioritise lean protein sources or protein alternatives. 

Don’t make any food ‘off limits’. Sweets and treats can be healthy – in moderation. 

Hit the hay

Good sleep hygiene, just like physical hygiene, is essential to a healthy life. Having a cutoff time for electronic devices before bed and building up a routine to wind down beforehand can help. You might want to drink herbal tea, take a shower, read a book or do stretches to signal to your body that it’s time to turn in.
