Investing in community mental health support is an investment in recovery

Recent reporting has highlighted significant funding pressures across mental health services in NSW, including the need for greater investment in community-based support.

Internal NSW Health documents estimate a $550–$600 million annual shortfall for public mental health services, alongside a further $187 million per year for the community-managed mental health sector.

These figures highlight an important point: a strong mental health system needs both clinical care and accessible community mental health and psychosocial support.

Supporting recovery in the community

For people experiencing complex mental health challenges, recovery is about much more than responding to a crisis.

Community-based psychosocial services can support people with areas including housing, employment, daily living and recovery. The NSW Health papers indicate that meeting unmet need for these supports would require approximately $187 million in additional annual investment.

At Flourish Australia, we see the value of supporting people in their communities, building on their strengths and helping them pursue goals that are meaningful to them.

This can include building independence, strengthening social connections, finding or maintaining a home, pursuing employment and education, and participating in community life.

Investing in people and recovery

Current pressures across the mental health system reinforce the importance of supporting people at every stage of their recovery journey.

Alongside well-resourced clinical and crisis services, strong community-managed services can play an important role in helping people live fulfilling lives in their communities.

Lived experience must also remain central to this work. Valuing the knowledge and perspectives of people with lived experience can help create mental health services that are more responsive to the people and communities they support.

Ultimately, conversations about mental health funding are about people.

Investing in community mental health support is an investment in recovery, connection and stronger communities.

At Flourish Australia, we will continue working alongside people with lived experience of mental health challenges, supporting people to pursue their individual recovery goals and live ordinary, fulfilling lives.
