To mark International Women’s Day, Flourish Australia hosted the annual special Let’s Do Lunch webinar exploring leadership, wellbeing, storytelling and inclusion, guided by this year’s theme, Give to Gain.
The session featured a thoughtful and generous conversation with Sam Lane — award‑winning journalist, author and Flourish Australia Ambassador — who reflected on progress, persistence and the quiet courage often required to create change over time.
Progress is built together
Sam spoke about how change rarely happens through one individual or one moment. Instead, it is built gradually through collective effort, shared responsibility and people choosing to keep showing up.
“Progress doesn’t happen because of one voice — it happens because many people choose to speak, to listen, and to stand alongside one another.”
She reflected on how this mirrors both gender equality and mental health reform, where meaningful change often takes time and requires patience, trust and collaboration.
Giving space, trust and opportunity
Throughout the conversation, Sam returned to the importance of giving — whether that’s space for stories to be heard, opportunities for people to grow, or support when someone is navigating challenge or transition.
“When we give time, opportunity and a voice to others, we don’t lose anything. We gain stronger communities and more inclusive futures.”
This idea strongly aligned with the Give to Gain theme, reinforcing that inclusion benefits everyone, not just individuals or particular groups.
Storytelling as connection
Sam also spoke about storytelling as a powerful way to build understanding and connection, particularly when stories go beyond achievement and surface‑level success.
“Stories have the power to change culture — especially when people trust you to share what really matters to them.”
She reflected on how listening deeply, and telling stories with care and respect, can help shift attitudes and create environments where people feel seen and valued.
Wellbeing, inclusion and everyday courage
The discussion acknowledged that progress does not always look dramatic or visible. Sometimes it is quiet, personal and deeply human.
“Sometimes progress is simply getting through the day. Sometimes it’s choosing to stay, or telling the truth when it would be easier not to.”
These reflections echoed Flourish Australia’s commitment to wellbeing, dignity and lived experience — and the understanding that inclusion and mental health are closely connected.
Thank you for being part of the conversation
We sincerely thank Sam Lane for her generosity, insight and openness, and thank everyone who joined us for the session. Your engagement, curiosity and reflection are what make these conversations meaningful.
