Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2022

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras begins this Friday, 18th of February and will run until March 6th.

Beginning in 1978 as a brave protest to decriminalise homosexuality, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has become one of the world’s most well-known and well attended celebrations of LGBT pride.

After being cancelled last year, Mari Gras Fair Day will return once more in 2022 to Victoria Park in Camperdown, Sydney for a day to celebrate community pride featuring community stalls and performances. The 2022 event will also feature for the first time a First Nations Circle which will highlight the importance of safe, celebratory spaces for LGBT First Nations communities.

Fair Day is just the start of the Mardi Gras festival which includes a film festival, theatre performances and parties to name a few.

Serving as the festival showpiece, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade will once again return to the Sydney Cricket Ground and will take place on March 6th. The parade will be broadcast in its entirety live across ABC TV and radio.

The theme for this year’s festival is  United We Shine which serves as a rally call to stand against hate and inequality.

There is still very much a need for public visibility and celebrations of the LGBT community.

In 2021, 41.9% of LGBTI people aged 18 and over reported that they had considered attempting suicide in their lifetime, compared with 13.3% of the general population. Other health outcomes in areas such as sexual health are also significantly worse in the LGBT population.

By removing barriers of discrimination and stigma, research has shown that these outcomes dramatically improve.
