World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10 October. It’s a reminder of the importance of good mental health and the need to prioritise and invest in mental wellbeing. The objective is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health.
This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day is “Connect with your community.” Connecting with our communities – the people and places where we feel safe, seen and heard – can help us feel cared for and supported, which is good for our mental health.
Feeling connected to others fosters a sense of belonging, which is vital for emotional wellbeing. When people feel they truly belong, they tend to experience a more positive mood, stronger resilience, and fewer symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Being part of a community also offers a supportive network that helps us through challenging times, recover from setbacks, and keep perspective when life becomes overwhelming.
Community can mean different things to different people. For example, your community might include your:
● friends, loved ones, or mob
● multicultural centre
● community choir
● community garden
● book club
● running group
● local volunteer group
● LGBTQIA+ group.
Tips for finding community
It can sometimes be hard to find a community. Here are a few tips that can help.
● follow your interests – join groups, classes, or events around hobbies, books, music, or causes you care about.
● volunteer – giving time connects you with people who share your values and builds natural bonds.
● show up regularly – community grows through consistency; keep attending, even if it feels slow at first.
● say yes to invitations – trying something new once can open doors you didn’t expect.
● start your own – if nothing feels right, create a small group around something you enjoy.
