Every year on 10 September, the world comes together to observe World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD)—a vital moment to raise awareness, foster hope, and advocate for change. In 2025, the campaign continues under the triennial theme: “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, a call to action to challenge stigma, dispel myths, and promote compassionate conversations around suicide prevention.
Suicide claims over 720,000 lives globally each year, leaving a lasting impact on families, friends, and communities. This year’s theme calls for a shift from silence and shame to understanding and compassion. It urges governments, organisations, and individuals to take proactive steps in creating safe spaces for people to seek help and feel heard.
In Australia, efforts to improve suicide prevention are being strengthened through the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Evaluation Framework, published in early 2025. Developed under the National Agreement 2022, this framework provides best-practice guidance for evaluating mental health and suicide prevention programs. It aims to build a stronger evidence base and foster a culture of continuous improvement across services. The accompanying Sharing Guidelines ensure that evaluation findings are shared responsibly and ethically, reinforcing transparency and collaboration across the sector.
